While growing long hair, I researched absolutely everything and anything available. After almost a year, I finally figured some things out.
Supplements Used For Growing Long Hair
First of all, every single “hair growth suplement” contains biotin. I dug deep into studies, and began compiling as much as possible. Then, I compiled the list of nutrients I needed. Here’s what I found:
Next, I analyzed what supplements contained the amounts I needed. I only ended up needing two supplements to meet those needs.
- Nature’s Bounty® Biotin 10000Mcg w/ 100mg Kerotin
- Centrum® Chewable Adult Vitamins
Proper Care of Growing Long Hair
Most beauticians will recommend you only wash your hair two to three times a week. While I try to stick to that as much as possible, reality sucks. My work requires me to go to exercise daily. Because of that, I need to shower at least once, sometimes twice a day.
When I can, I avoid touching my hair. However, good hygeine means not letting bacteria hang out. That means using high quality hair products to clean and condition. Never get stuck on a brand name. I personally use Suave Professionals® Biotin Infusion Shampoo and Conditioner. They work well with my hair type.
Your hair stylist can help you decide more specifically the best products for your hair. Use their experience.
Besides cleaning and conditioning, you need to keep knots out of your hair. Again, calling on your stylists expertise helps here. For me, I use a wide tooth comb out of the shower, and then a fine brush to smooth it out before my hair dries. At minimum, you should brush first thing every morning, and last thing every night before bed.
Preventing/Repairing Damage While Growing Long Hair
First, avoid using heat to style your hair. The heat damages your hair and causes it to break. Because of this, it makes growing long hair nearly impossible.
Secondly, try not to use chemicals like gel, mouse, or hairspray on your hair. This stunts its growth almost as bad as heat. Unfortunately, the Marines require me to follow exteremly specific standards for my long hair. If your work requires you to use harsh chemicals, take it out as soon as possible.
Repairing Damaged Hair
- Heat pure coconut oil to 76° F
First, fill a cup with warm water. Then, scoop about 2 tbsp of coconut oil into a glass. Finally, place the glass into the water until the oil melts into a liquid.
- Apply the coconut oil to your damp hair
Start by washing your hair normally. Then, massage the coconut oil all the way to the root. Make certain you leave it on for at least thirty minutes.
- Shampoo the coconut oil completely out
Use your preferred shampoo to wash all of the coconut oil off. If you need to recondition it afterwards, use your finger tips to massage it lighlty into the ends.
My Experience Growing Long Hair
I saw about 1.5 inches growth in first thirty days. After the initial spurt, I realized that supplements work better in cycles. As a result, I began taking supplements during the even months of the year.
Please let me know in the comments below, if you have any other advice!
Hope this helps 😀
I grew up in Colonia Juarez, Chihuahua, México, where people either owned cattle ranches or fruit orchards. Much of my work ethic came from working on Rancho La Mesa (my family’s ranch). That ranch also sparked what grew into my wild imagination. I read somewhere that you should write the story you want to read, and that stuck with me. My writing began in sixth grade, around the time I began learning to type.
